Size 30cm (12 in) square - 1998
This is a block that I made for an American internet friend.
Australia is a land of stark contrasts, I used blue for the wide
open skies and the ocean that surrounds us, yellow for the sun
and sand, green for the rain forests and red for the outback.
There are a couple of Australian designed fabrics and a
couple that I dyed.
Embelishments include: star beads stitched to form the
Southern Cross constellation, shells, a seagull, a beaded
crocodile, a redback spider, a flying kangaroo (a Qantas airlines
pin), a frill necked lizard (on a 2 cent coin), a fish,
hook, line and sinker. Australian industries are representd by: an
embroidered sheep, a pearl and diamond (both fake) pendant, a
pineapple and wheat stitch.
